Florence - Day 3, Part 2
After lunch, it started to rain again and so we decided to see if we could get into the Accademia, which houses the most famous statue in the world - Michelangelo's David. We didn't have reservations and so we were taking our chances, but the line turned out to be only about an hour wait, which wasn't bad at all. After all, it was raining, what else were we going to do?
In addition to the David, the Accademia also houses a nice collection of pre-Renaissance and Renaissance paintings and a collection of instruments, including a Stradivarious violin. We took our time getting to the David, but when we did, we could hardly believe our eyes. He was spectacular, an absolute work of genius. We stood there gawking for awhile and then made our way back out into the temperamental Firenze weather.
After stopping for what is possibly the BEST gelato in Florence (I will have to look up the name and post it later), we went to an Internet cafe for a couple of hours and got caught up on some things. After a brief stop at the apartment to freshen up, we went for dinner at Osteria Pepo and enjoyed yet another amazing meal (God, I am going to be so fat when I come home, already the pants are getting tight. Jenny Craig here I come.) We each had a glass of the house white, something Griglio I-don't-know-what, and M had potato ravioli with pesto and the most delicious meatballs in pomodoro sauce. I had an insalata mista and homemade lasagne. Again, very simple and fresh preparations making for excellent food. Bellies full, we waddled out of the Osteria and through the neighborhood back to our apartment where we watched the Travel Channel, read our books, and rested up for a busy Saturday.
We are leaving for Roma tomorrow, can't wait to see what she has in store!
Next post: read about our most excellent trip to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, M's $50 "Mont Blanc" watch, and Cheryle's $5 "Gucci" purse.
Ciao!
